At least four dead and hundreds of homes destroyed after week of wildfires rage throughout Texas

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Vt664MFu on 25-11-2017

Friday, September 9, 2011

Parts of Texas have been scorched by sweeping wildfires this week. Officials state that a wildfire which swept much of central Texas this week destroyed at least 1,400 homes and forced about 5,000 people to evacuate to safety. An official with the Texas Forestry Services told news sources on Thursday that much of that fire has been contained.

Officials have speculated that this fire alone has destroyed more homes than any other wildfire on record in the state. Officials are welcoming dropping temperatures, stating this will increase their ability to fight the fires effectively. A converted DC-10 aircraft was recently made available to fire authorities, but cannot be used until Friday as workers still need to time to prepare on-board equipment.

One of the two fatalities in the central part of the state has been identified as Michael Troy Farr, 49, who died at his home. Earlier in the week, a woman and her infant died in a related blaze that quickly engulfed their home located near the city of Gladewater, located in the eastern part of the state. On Thursday, officials warned that East Texas has become the center of wildfire activity in the state.

At least 170 wildfires have ravaged much of the state over the past week. On Tuesday, a thick haze of smoke enveloped the city of Tyler for several hours, forcing school officials to cancel all outdoor sports activities. Since late 2010 the overall devastation of wildfires in the state is estimated to cost at least US$216 million (£136 million, 157.5 million) in firefighting expenses. The state’s Lieutenant Governor, David Dewhurst, who is the acting governor in Governor Perry’s absence, indicated he will ask the federal government to declare Texas a major disaster area. President Obama has also promised to provide needed assistance to local officials.

Al Sharpton speaks out on race, rights and what bothers him about his critics

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

The event was organized by Loreto Puebla, former Governor of {{w|Cardenal Caro Province||, coordinated with Mayor of Pichilemu Roberto Córdova Carreño.

Fernando Urzúa, who also works as newsreader on a local radio, conducted the event. The event was broadcasted by Radio Somos Pichilemu (We Are Pichilemu), owned by former Mayor Jorge Vargas González, who also attended the event.

French workers use threats in compensation demand

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Vt664MFu on 23-11-2017

Friday, July 17, 2009 Following similar threats by workers at New Fabris and Nortel, workers at JLG in Tonneins, France, threatened to blow up several platform cranes. The JLG factory announced in April 2009 that it will fire 53 of its 163 workers by the end of 2009, while the remaining 110 jobs will not be secure over the next 2 years.

JLG Tonneins was acquired in 2006 with its parent JLG Industries, a maker of aerial work platforms, by the U.S.-based Oshkosh Corporation. Despite being hugely profitable in the past, production has been much reduced since 2008 with the contraction of the construction industry and lower demand for its products. Despite excellent past results the new American management demanded sweeping cuts at the company.

In the view of locals, “the company’s actions are a disgrace given the expensive perks, such as official cars, for its corporate fat cats, compared to the sacrifice, silence, and dignity demanded by the company of those it has made redundant.”

The management offered severance pay of 3,000 (US $4,200), however the workers demanded a severance package commensurate with “the wealth that their labor has generated.” Worker’s delegates requested a “supra-legal” payment of € 30,000, on Thursday 16 of July the management responded with a counter offer of € 16,000. On Thursday night the worker’s actions secured the € 30,000 settlement initially demanded.

Chicago Metra considers selling naming rights for train lines, stations

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Vt664MFu on 23-11-2017

Sunday, February 14, 2010

Chicago’s Metra is currently considering the possibility of selling the naming rights to its train stations, rail lines, and even bridges to generate more revenue.

The regional rail system for Chicago and its surrounding suburbs has been experiencing revenue shortfalls, along with other public transportation agencies such as the Chicago Transit Authority and Pace. They all rely on sales taxes and fares to fund their services, but the recent recession has reduced sales tax revenues, and unemployment has caused ridership to fall. Compared to 86.8 million trips in 2008, Metra reported that only 82.3 million trips were provided in 2009. As spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet said, “We’re looking at any opportunity to increase non-fare revenue.”

A law approved by former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich in 2008 granted free rides to all seniors regardless of income, adding to the decreasing fare revenues as well. State lawmakers are trying to restrict the free rides to low-income seniors; Metra has not yet commented on the issue, however.

New designs put on the agency’s website last September has attracted more traffic, and Metra is considering selling advertising space online. In addition, advertising space could be sold on the outside of train cars as well. As for the naming rights to stations and routes, Metra plans to hire a consultant that would figure out the details of such a proposal. Spokesperson Meg Reihle did not know how much money Metra could gain from the sale or which organizations would be interested in buying.

According to Ms. Reihle, public transit agencies in other cities have sold naming rights as well, such as the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority in Cleveland and Long Island Rail Road in Long Island. TECO Energy sponsors a rail line in Tampa’s Hillsborough Area Regional Transit for US$1 million over ten years.

Throughout its 26-year history, Metra has named several of its locomotives and renamed two stations: Ogilvie Transportation Center, which was previously named North Western Station, and Millennium Terminal, which was previously called Randolph Street. No transactions were made in renaming those two stations, however. There is also a Station named after the candy maker Mars, but that station was named before Metra took it over, and the company doesn’t pay Metra for any naming rights.

I think the business community recognizes that transit is positive for their advertising benefit

Execuive Director Phil Pagano sees the proposal as a way for businesses to advertise themselves. “I think the business community recognizes that transit is positive for their advertising benefit,” said Mr. Pagano at a board meeting. In addition to businesses, hospitals located near the train stations could purchase naming rights as well. However, Mr. Pagano has also stated that “the agency would be selective about the type of businesses it partners with.”

Metra has said that it will be sensitive to the wishes of the communities near the stops, and town names will not be removed from station names. Rather, both the municipality and the sponsoring organization would share the naming rights, such as in renaming Naperville Station to “Naperville Boeing Station”. “I’m not sure whether [the old name] is first or second, but definitely it’s going to have to be there,” said Mr. Pagano.

Apple to hold media event on September 1, may update iPods and Apple TV

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Vt664MFu on 23-11-2017

Friday, August 27, 2010

Apple Inc. will hold a music-centered event in San Francisco, California on September 1. It has been widely speculated that the company will introduce an updated line of iPod portable music players and a new Apple TV.

The company e-mailed invitations for the event to various media organizations on Wednesday. The message included a picture of a guitar and the time of the event. Apple did not release any information about what products would be involved.

Apple has released new iPods through previous similar events in September in anticipation of the holiday shopping season. This year, Apple may unveil a new iPod Touch with two cameras, similar to their recent iPhone 4 design. It will likely also update the iTunes music store and software.

Speculation about a new Apple TV is mixed. While many blogs are reporting that a refresh of the device will be announced, analysts say that it is unlikely to happen during next Wednesday’s event. According to Reuters, sources are saying that Apple is negotiating with major television networks, including ABC and NBC, in order to provide shows for purchase on iTunes. However, they also reported that the deal has not been completed, and none of the companies involved have commented on the rumors.

It has also been rumored that Apple will introduce a new online music service. In 2009, Apple took over a company that allowed users to stream music online rather than download individual songs. Apple has not confirmed the rumors.

Last September’s media event saw the return of Apple CEO Steve Jobs after he took a break to undergo a liver transplant. This year, the event will be held in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, previously used by Apple in April for the unveiling of the iPad.

How To Save Money When Booking Airport Parking}

How to save money when booking airport parking

Paula Garrett

As with all holidays, destination, accommodation and flights take priority, but its easy to get caught up in the excitement of the holiday preparations and neglect important aspects of the holiday which could end up costing you extra. One of these key areas is airport parking.

There are many options available when selecting airport parking, such as on-site parking, off-site parking or perhaps meet and greet valet parking. Due to the wide choice, and because the main components of your holiday have been booked, its easy to just say Ill deal with it later. But this decision to delay booking it until nearer the departure date could end up costing you dearly. As the holiday season approaches and airport parking bays are booked, the number of parking spaces available decreases and as the old favourite law of supply and demand states: if supply is short the price increases. This law also applies to airport parking: because of increased availability early in the season you may find your parking cheaper than if you were to leave it to the last moment – you should also have more parking options available to you the earlier you book.

Its no good waiting until just before your holiday to book a bay thinking a company will offload parking bays cheaply just to fill them it just isnt going to happen! So it really does make sense to book early, and if nothing else, its just one less thing to panic about nearer the day.

So where do you start when booking airport parking when there are so many options available? Firstly, check out what parking options are available at your airport. Generally, there is onsite parking in either short-term or long-term car parks and off-site parking which tends to be a cheaper option.

YouTube Preview Image

On-site parking, i.e. on airport, is either operated by the airport authority or an independent contractor; off-site parking is run by independent contractors.

With on-site parking the options are short-stay or long-stay. Short-stay parking is exactly that, short stay, designed for passenger drop-off and pick-up. An hourly-rate is usually charged for the first day of parking and daily rates thereafter. Short-stay parking is suitable for parking up to 4 hours, any longer and it is usually cheaper to pay a daily rate in the long-stay car park. A word of warning: the daily rate in the short-term car park is significantly more expensive than the long-stay. There have been cases where travellers have inadvertently parked in the short-stay car park and faced huge parking bills when they got back, sometimes more than the cost of their flights!

On-site long-term parking is for travellers who require parking for an extended break, car parking fees here as cheaper than the short-stay, but generally more expensive than the off-site car parks. Car parking here is charged on a daily rate so if you are just picking up or dropping off a passenger, and will only be at the airport for a couple of hours, it is advisable to use the short-stay car park where you will be charged by the hour and not the day.

Off-site parking is organised at off-airport sites where travellers drive to the car park, park their car and catch a shuttle bus to the airport terminal. Off-site car parks run shuttle buses to and from the airport, so on your return from holiday you need to catch a shuttle bus back to your off-site car park. Parking fees are generally lower for off-site parking spaces.

If you have large sporting equipment such as a bike, ski equipment, surf or windsurfing board, it is worth checking in advance with your parking operator to ensure they can accommodate your sports equipment on their shuttle bus. Likewise, if you have a large vehicle or trailer check that the car park can accommodate your vehicle an excess charge will probably be levied for these.

Meet and greet parking, or valet parking as it is sometimes known, is parking where you are not required to park your car, you simply drive right up to the airport terminal where a meet and greet driver is waiting to meet you and take your car to the meet and greet car park. Once your baggage has been unloaded from your car you are free to walk straight into the airport terminal. This type of parking is suitable for travellers with children, travellers with limited mobility, business travellers short on time, or travellers on activity holidays with heavy or over-sized sports equipment.

On return travellers are requested to call the meet and greet operator from baggage reclaim so when they exit the terminal their car should be there waiting for them, warmed up and ready to go! Car valeting is often available with the meet and greet option, so if you fancy coming home to a clean car check the services available with your operator.

With all the above options it really is down to you to decide which to choose, but whatever you do decide it really is better to pre-book your parking to obtain the best possible price. If booking off-site parking make sure you have the directions to it and a contact number when setting out so you avoid wasting valuable time driving around when you should be checking in. If parking on-site, remember where and on which level you parked your car to avoid hassle when you return.

68 pieces of luggage found behind Texas pet store

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by Vt664MFu on 22-11-2017

Wednesday, December 27, 2006

At least 68 different pieces of luggage has been found behind a pet store inside a garbage dumpster in Houston, Texas. The luggage came from several different international flights and authorities do not know how they got there or if the contents of the luggage have been stolen.

“We’re going to be investigating and the authorities are going to be investigating,” said spokeswoman for Continental Airlines, Mary Clark. All luggage was handed over to Continental Airlines.

The luggage is reported to have been sifted through, and most pieces have come from all over the world. The luggage is reported to have come from Bush Intercontinental Airport. Some pieces of the luggage have name tags and Clark states that “we’re trying to reach whoever we need to let them know the bags are there.”

Officers with the Houston Police Department are in charge of the investigation. The luggage was found by individuals who own the pet store.

The FBI has stated that the bags do not pose any danger.
